Solar pumps and street lights
Water and light where the power lines do not reach.
What it is
A solar water pump lifts water straight from the panels’ power by day, into a tank, a pond or an irrigation channel. A solar street light carries its own panel, battery and controller on the pole, charges by day and switches on by itself at dusk. Neither needs a grid connection.
Suits
- Farms and fisheries
- Industrial estates and housing
- Village roads and car parks
How it works
- Solar panel
- Controller
- Pump or battery
- Water in the tank, or a light that comes on
What the survey checks
- How much water is needed a day, and how high it must be lifted
- The water source: a well, a river or a pond
- Spacing between lights and how bright they need to be
- Sunshine and shade where the panels will stand
Common questions
Do solar street lights need a grid connection?
No. Each light carries its own panel, battery and controller, and switches itself on at dusk.
Can a solar water pump run without a battery?
Yes. Many pumps run straight from the panels by day and fill a tank or pond, so the water is there whenever it is needed.
